What do I need in my resume?

Are  you unclear as to what it is that you need in your resume?  Do you have a lot of experience and want to ensure that it is all documented?

Quite often I receive resumes that are pages and pages long.  I will tell you that unless there is a requirement for specific information as part of an employment application, we typically like to keep resumes at 2 pages maximum.

Many people seem to think that they need to list EVERY detail of their background to give them the best chance of landing the job.  WRONG—you need to make sure that you include the right information and it is streamlined such that it is still an attractive read to the individual
reviewing.   Remember, in the interview process you can expand on this information.

You need to capture the attention of the reader and keep them motivated to continue to read about you.  When you have multiple pages of jam-packed information, you lose your reader very quickly!

There are many stats out there about how long resume reviewers spend per resume—I can tell you that I will give it a 5 second look…if I like what I see, I will keep reading.  Yup—5 seconds…  There are too many people looking for work and I have a huge pile to review.

So, review the job ad closely, think clearly about what it is you NEED to include and try to keep to 2
pages.

Do you Network?

As a business or as an individual looking for a job, networking is becoming more and more important.  We have all heard the phrase “It is really who you know…” and this is never more truer than in today’s world.
Countless business contacts are made every day through events or situations that encourage or encompas networking…people coming together.  Likewise these are tremendous opportunities to connect with people who may have or may be connected with someone where there are job openings.
It takes a bit of courage, but the benefits far outweigh the uncomfortable few moments when you walk into a room and have to get to know people!
Interested in what networking groups are in your area?  Check out:  www.meetup.com  as one resource that will list groups that network near you.
Good luck and get networking!

Does your company have a revolving door?

Is your company developing a reputation for having a revolving door?  Are employees joining the company and then leaving almost as quickly as they joined?

If this situation is familiar, you want to bet it is or will be known in the outside world!   How is it known?  Well, there are many ways that this reputation develops, however, here are the two most popular reasons:
*  Word of mouth from employees that work/have worked there or have known people that have worked there.
*  Continual advertisement for the same positions over and over.

These items indicate to the outside world that there is a bad work environment, that there are not things in place to attract and keep employees.  This is absolutely not a good reputation to have.  You will be attracting all the wrong people – mainly those that can’t find a job anywhere else and just want to take your job while they look for something else.

How do you stop this trend?  Well, you will need to examine why it is that people are leaving.  Ask them!  Do exit interviews, act on the feedback!   Look for suggestions from current employees on things that would improve their work environment.

The key is to STOP the trend quickly as it takes a long time to reverse this reputation.

Applying multiple times for the same job

Hi all, well, my inspiration for this blog update comes from person experience.  Maybe it is a bit of a rant….  Let’s examine this question:  “Does applying for the same job multiple times mean that you will have a better chance at getting noticed and maybe get the job?”  Well, the simple answer to this is “NO!”  You will absolutely get noticed, but for all the wrong reasons in most cases.  First, you risk the interviewer recognizing this pattern and getting frustrated with seeing your application over and over (Trust me, it is noticeable).  Second, you risk the recruiter realizing that they have wasted time reviewing your resume yet again. Third, you may just push yourself OUT of the running specifically because of this.

So, why do people do this?  They worry their resume may not have been received….they want to ensure that the company realizes they are interested in the job…they don’t realize they have applied before….etc.  Please, if I can give you any advice,  keep a record of the company and job(s) you have applied to, ensure to check this list before hitting “send” and don’t apply for the same job in the same location over and over again.  On this last point, many times you will see an ad for a position with a company in a specific location however they post the same job ad in multiple locations trying to draw in additional candidates.  Read the ad closely – if the job title and location for the job are the same….you don’t need to apply to every ad.

If you are worried that something went wrong in the sending process (your computer locked up) – make a note of that in a second email, if you want to know if it was received – add a read receipt (though sometimes this isn’t effective as the reader has to choose to reply to it).  If it sent correctly and you don’t get a call, it is probably because your experience was not the best fit for the role.  “Pull up your socks” and move forward…

This is all geared to give you the best chance of landing an interview and “the job”, so please keep my advice close at hand…

End of rant…..
