The Evolution of HR

hrThe Past

Years ago when you mentioned the term HR – people rarely knew what you were referring to.  Human Resources was not a widely known term and to a certain extent, Human Resource professionals were still working through all the details too!   The experts knew there was a need for this type of expertise, but defining it and then being able to bring credibility to the profession and educating the public on the value of HR was the next step.  Years of research and dedicated work went into the defining the role of an HR professional and building the credibility and value of HR as a resource.

The Present

It would be very rare to encounter someone who is not familiar with what an HR professional is.  HR professionals hold certifications and companies have realized the value of the profession and the value of a dedicated resource – be it an employee or HR consultant for their company.  Companies are requiring HR candidates to be pursuing or to hold a CHRP.  Most management teams include HR and those that don’t are considered “behind the times”.

The Future

The profession will continue to grow with more educated and certified professionals having a seat at the boardroom table.  The value of an HR resource will become even more obvious and companies will be viewed at as incomplete without an HR resource.

The profession is growing.  For those familiar with HR, the value to a company, their people, morale, and their bottom line, is obvious.

If you don’t have HR on your team, you are missing out on a strategic partner, most likely have legal gaps within your business and you are taking a huge business risk.

Close that gap, reduce the risk and bring HR into your business.

Looking for your HR partner – we are just a call away.

What are you thankful for as an Employee?

Do you reflect?

Having just celebrated a fantastic Thanksgiving celebration this weekend here in Canada, for me, it is often a good reminder to reflect on what is important in life and what I have to be thankful for.  I hope you did some reflecting as well as this is something that we don’t often do.  Instead, we have a tendency to get caught up in all the drama that is part of our every day life – and why not right – it is hard not to sometimes!!

Employer reflection

pablo-3

How about taking things a little further?

  1. Have you thought about what you have to be thankful for as an employee?
  2. What is it that your employer has provided to the employees that really makes a difference to you?
  3. What keeps you there?
  4. What keeps you from moving to another company?
  5. What does your employer do that others don’t do or don’t do well?
  6. How are the benefits?
  7. What is the workplace culture like?
  8. Is there an education fund?  Is there an open door policy?
  9. Are people promoted from within?
  10. Do you feel valued at work?
  11. Are you paid well for what you do?
  12. Do the managers care?
  13. Can you talk to your boss and does he/she actually listen?
  14. Are there workplace activities?
  15. What else?

Life

Sometimes life gets in the way…something happens at work and all of the sudden we forget the important things.  We forget everything an employer HAS done for us, or what the employer has worked hard to create in the office and we start to look at other options.  Maybe we see a similar job posting with a higher salary offering.  But is it all about salary?  Will the other employer truly provide you with everything that makes you happy at your current job?

Take a moment

Take a moment to write out a top 10 list – think about all those things that make a difference – TO YOU – in your workplace…the list may surprise you and as an added bonus, it may help you in the long run!

How to be an Effective Employee!

How many articles do we see on how to be an effective manager or  on how important leadership is?  Well it IS important…however, it is also important to be a great employee!  So how about some tips that you can think about and incorporate into your every day work life to ensure that you are at the top of your game!

Listen

Listening is so important, especially when it comes to receiving performance feedback, instructions on projects, direction, etc.  And to be able to actively listen is even more important – this means, confirming what was said by reiterating it to ensure you “get it”.

Be professional

It is fun to joke around, but keep it professional.  Remember that you are in a professional work spacegood employee – even if your work space is designed to be fun – remember that there is a fine line between being fun and maintaining professionalism.  Likewise when you disagree with something – take a breath and think before you respond – think before you act or react.

Look for opportunities to learn

Want to grow in your position?  This isn’t all your manager’s responsibility, you have to take responsibility here too.  Take part in training workshops; look for opportunities to work on a new project where you can gain more skills and knowledge.  Have an education policy at work?   Use it.

Be part of the solution

It is so easy to get caught up in the drama within the office.  It is easy to look at what the company doesn’t have.  I challenge you to look at what the company does have and not to buy into the drama.  Look to help solve problems, encourage teamwork, volunteer to help with problem areas.

Be timely

Sure, be timely to work, but also in your deadlines.  Time is money, money pays for your salary.  Be conscious of when projects are due and do what it takes to meet the deadlines and exceed expectations.

Share your expertise

An expert in something?  Why not share it?  Offer to hold a lunch and learn and share your knowledge on Excel or Word or….  This not only increases your value within the office, but it spreads the knowledge, increases efficiency and improves other employee skill sets too!

Be an asset to the company you work for and you will secure your future employment.

Thinking about HR for your Business?

I get it, you are a small business – maybe even a startup and you’ve been tackling various HR items on your own to this point.  Paying for a full time or even part time HR employee isn’t in the budget and really for the size of business you have right now, you don’t need HR.  Or do you?

A common misconception is that businesses don’t need an HR position until they hit about 50 employees or so.  This is so wrong.  Yes, I might be a bit biased, but by the end of this article, I would hope you would agree with me and what is becoming much more common place movement and advised by experts.

To look at this a little deeper, it is helpful to understand some of the functions of HR.  An effective HR resource will ensure that your company has a solid HR foundation from which to build upon as your business grows and to support business growth.  This foundation would include things like:  Effective recruitment and selection plans including set interview questions, job descriptions, putting employment agreements in place, orientation plans, legally required and workplace specific employment policies, required employee files, employee documentation, performance management processes and procedures, documented disciplinary processes, reward and recognition strategies, goal setting, leadership and mentoring, succession planning, termination procedures and documentation and so much more.

The biggest impact on your business is the fact that potential legal issues can be minimized.  It is one thing to have templates in place for various HR related items, but it is another thing to understand how to use them, pitfalls and to ensure they are implemented properly.  Training is huge.  In the HR world, it is very easy for a manager to ask something in an interview that is against human rights, say something to an employee that opens up a discrimination case, terminate someone without due diligence and so on.  Any one of these items can open your business to huge law suits which obviously directly impact your bottom line but also your reputation and can ultimately destroy your business.

Knowledge gained from an HR professional is huge.  Training provided to you and your team on HR related items (some listed above) helps protect you from massive financial loss.
I challenge you to think about the impact of NOT having HR representation for your business.  You may not need to hire an HR employee for your business at this time, but I strongly advise you to have HR representation.  Whether you look at engaging in HR related services through us such as our new HR Hotline service, or through another method, don’t miss out on the opportunity to minimize your risk and grow your bottom line.
