Social Media Could be Killing your Job Hunt

Social media – isn’t it fantastic? You can connect with friends you haven’t talked to forever, you can post exactly how you are feeling about something and get support from others, you can be yourself without being judged…. Is this all true? Well, there certainly are advantages to social media but you also must be careful with just how much you share if your profiles are openly shared with the world.

There are many cases in front of courts about employees being terminated due to social media posts and actions within those outlets. Instead of diving into the big ugly ball of issues on the employment side….let’s take a quick look at recruiting and social media.

Do recruiters or HR departments really look into your social media accounts when they are looking to possibly hire you? YES! They absolutely do! Yes they will look to see if you have a LinkedIn account. Yes they will look to see if you have a Facebook account. And yes, they may find interesting things in these and other social media outlets that you have been actively involved in. Why do they do this? Well, it helps give a more balanced “picture” of who it is that they may be considering hiring.

In an interview and on your resume, you are (or should be) on your best behaviour and presenting yourself in the best professional light. However, this may not accurately represent who you REALLY are! By talking to references and looking into social media, the recruiter or hiring team feels they get a more accurate picture of who you really are and how you would fit or not fit with their company. So if you are posting all kinds of pictures of yourself in drunken stupors, in provocative poses, etc., you are taking a chance that you could be judged in a hiring situation.
My advice, think long and hard about the things you post…the things you say…and how open you leave your profiles – especially if you are looking for work.

Considering Working with a Friend?

Ok, so here is the scenario…Your best friend tells you there is a fantastic job opening at their workplace. You interview and are offered the job. You are excited at the possibility of working with your friend, but do you take the job?

At first the opportunity to work with your friend sounds great but there are some pitfalls that may come along with this opportunity…have you thought about them?

Here are a few:

*  What happens if your friend is promoted and becomes your boss? What about if you were promoted to be their boss?
*  What happens if you feel your friend isn’t pulling their weight on a project?
*  What if your friend was terminated?
*  Would other staff treat you differently knowing about the friendship?
*  What other possibilities come to mind? There are many. Some people don’t take the time to really think this through.
*  Would your relationship change with your friend after taking this position? It is highly likely. If you truly value your friendship, do you take the risk?

Our friends mean the world to us, is there potential to risk that friendship by working together?  Ensure to make the right choice for you, your friend and your friendship…

Tips to Kick Start your Career!

Have you been looking to make a change? Have you been job searching but you have found yourself in a slump? Here are some tips and tricks to get yourself prepped for new opportunities and New You!!!!

  1. Make a plan. Where would you like to see yourself a year from now? How about 5 years from now? Once you have an idea…draw a roadmap. What are the things you need to do to get there. Make the plan one that is SMART – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and has a Time Line to it.
  2. Review your resume. If you have been using the same resume with minimal results – there is something wrong. Re-vamp it, or get a professional to do it. Make sure it “Speaks” what you are looking for, highlights your qualifications and shows an absolute match to the type of role you would be applying to.
  3. Be prepared to make your job search your new job! There is a lot of competition out there, be prepared to be in it for the long haul. Don’t give up – stay positive, keep your head held high…you have skills, now go get ’em! If you are currently working, you will need to set aside time each day to push and continue embarking on your quest for your new role. If you are not currently working – set aside specific hours that are geared to execute on your plan.
  4. Brush up on your interview skills. How do you interview? Are you polished? Are you confident in your interviewing skills? If not – enlist a professional to assist you in your preparation. It is worth the investment in your future.
  5. Look for motivation. A job search can be time consuming and can be a long tough road. Look for things to motivate you. Create and celebrate milestones whether it is an interview, steps to get you closer to your goal, or… What are the things that help motivate you during tough times? Going to the gym? Hanging with friends? Inspirational Quotes? I have printed off inspirational quotes and put them on the mirror so that I see them each day…do what makes sense to keep you motivated.

Get all of this in line and be prepared to make your effort count! Surround yourself with people that are positive and network with those that can help you propel your career forward. You can do it! This is YOUR year! Good luck!
